Be careful if you're considering hosting any type of non-conventional event in collaboration with the DMSC. I made a film about National Parks that was an hour long- basically a music video filled with nature photography & footage. I figured what better place to get this out there than the DMSC; that's what it was created for.
Use the space for your art but go into it knowing you are responsible for 99% of the marketing. And the venue isn't cheap.
The venue manager never showed up, the bartender talked loud enough to be heard over the music for the entirety of the movie, and the guy running it in the back cut it off before the credits even rolled.
The venue manager said she'd never had good luck hosting a film before but she loved my video so much she didn't see why it wouldn't receive a great audience. She came up with several awesome ideas of how to promote it and make it a unique experience for everyone. Amped up by her enthusiasm I was genuinely shocked when 2 weeks later I'd heard nothing from her other than confirmation that the space was mine for the time & fee that was discussed during our first (and only) meeting.
I mostly go for the comics. But there’s a nice gallery space and lots of classes for lots of things.
The space (Basement) is cool. It has good ambiance, a fun bar, sweet lighting and room for at least 100 people. I give the space itself a 5. But the employees don't seem to have the passion or follow-through to get much done. It was an over-all lackluster experience. Unfortunately, it seems like the lack of competition in Des Moines for spaces where artists can showcase their work, whether it's film or fashion or photography, is what is keeping the DMSC booked every weekend. It will be interesting to see what happens as Des Moines grows and attains more venues such as the Barnum Factory, etc. The DMSC might have to invest in more industrious employees.
Love the venue space, event's, the Capes Kafe, Malo and teaching Breakdancing here.
Went to the silent disco. I would have liked if there was a schedule so we would know what dj was playing. Otherwise it was a fun place to go and I will be looking for more things here in the future.
"We've never had much luck hosting a film before..." should have tipped me off but I was hopeful. Oh well.
Something for everyone and they keep prices reasonable.
Several weeks go by and and the day of the film premier arrives. The DMSC had done nothing, literally nothing, to promote it at all. They didn't make a flyer, or a Facebook page, or share it with the public in any way. After several attempts to contact the venue manager and her (co-worker, assistants?) I did get one thing shared the day of.
